FEB 3 – JAISWAL BECOMES THIRD-YOUNGEST INDIAN TO SCORE TEST DOUBLE

Yashasvi Jaiswal entered the record books hammering a magnificent 209 off 290 deliveries in the second Test against England at Visakhapatnam.

Jaiswal became the third youngest Indian batter to record a double ton, achieving the feat at the age of 22 years and 36 days.

Vinod Kambli had piled on a double hundred against England at the age of 21 years and 32 days while Sunil Gavaskar’s maiden double century in the 1971 Port of Spain Test came when he was 21 years and 277 days.

Jaiswal also joined a unique club of seven batters who have achieved the distinction of scoring a double with no other team-mate registering a fifty in the innings.

The second-highest score in India’s first innings was Shubman Gill’s 34.

Jaiswal joined the likes of Brian Lara, Dudley Nourse, Leonard Hutton, Arthur Morris, Dennis Amiss and Marvan Atapattu.

One of the features of Jaiswal’s batting during his double ton was his dominance against spin. 192 of his 209 runs (nearly 92%) came against the slower bowlers at a strike rate of 86.09.

Pathum Nissanka joined an elite club of batters and became the tenth player in history to record a double ton in ODI cricket during his magnificent unbeaten 210 off just 139 deliveries against Afghanistan in Pallekele.

It was only the 12th double hundred in ODI history and the first by a Sri Lankan batter. The previous highest was Sanath Jayasuriya’s 189 against India at Sharjah in 2000.

FEB 11 – MAXWELL HAMMERS FASTEST T20I TON IN AUSTRALIA

Glenn Maxwell lit the Adelaide Oval on fire blasting a 50-ball ton against the West Indies. Maxwell smashed an undefeated 120 off just 55 deliveries in a knock that included 12 hits to the fence and eight over it to power Australia to 241/4 – which remains the highest T20I total in the country ever! Maxwell’s hundred was also the fastest T20I century Down Under.

FEB 16 – NZ WIN FIRST TEST SERIES VS SA

New Zealand created history by winning their first Test series against South Africa in their 18th attempt.

Kane Williamson entered the record books smashing three hundreds in the two-match series including two in the opener at Mount Maunganui.

South Africa had previously won 13 of the 17 Test series against New Zealand while four series were drawn in a rivalry dating back to 1932.

FEB 17 – MI EMIRATES WIN SECOND EDITION OF ILT20 IN DUBAI

MI Emirates defeated Dubai Capitals in the final of the 2024 ILT20 in Dubai.

Skipper, Nicholas Pooran was the star for Emirates as he blasted six towering sixes in his breathtaking 57 off just 27 deliveries, powering MIE to a mammoth 208/3 which proved too much for the Capitals who went down by 45 runs.

The top three wicket-takers of the season – Fazalhaq Farooqi, Waqar Salamkheil and Trent Boult – were all from MIE.

The first match of the final round of group matches took place between Korea and Malaysia and resulted in a 3-3 draw. The splitting of points confirmed Korea's qualification to the semifinal. The draw also ensured that Pakistan would finish second in the group regardless of their result in their last group match against India.

Interestingly, the top two wicket-takers in the inaugural edition in 2023 were also from the victorious team – Gulf Giants, reinforcing the old cricketing adage that batters win matches but bowlers win tournaments.

That concludes part 2 of the 2024 cricket series. The third part will feature Royal Challengers Bengaluru's first-ever title (WPL)sga gaming, India humbling Bazball and more.)
