Taking part in the Constitution debate in Lok Sabha on Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the Constitutional amendments introduced by his government were not aimed at consolidating power. In contrastfb777, he alleged that the Nehru-Gandhi family had “made a habit” of amending the Constitution to serve their interests, starting with Jawaharlal Nehru, the country's first Prime Minister.

Replying to the two-day debate on the 75th anniversary of the Constitution’s adoption, Modi delivered one of his longest speeches, lasting one hour and 50 minutes. A considerable amount of time in his address was spent targeting the Congress party and the Nehru-Gandhi family.

Mighty Australia are placed third with seven points from two wins and a loss. Argentina have also qualified for the quarterfinals with four points from three games, which includes a win, a draw and a loss.

“This family challenged the Constitution at every level,” Modi said, adding that its members had held power for 55 years. He accused them of repeatedly “wounding” the Constitution, citing decisions made by Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, and Rajiv Gandhi during their tenures as Prime Ministers. Taking a swipe at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Modi said the "next generation" of the family is continuing the same practices.

Modi said that leaders like him and many others from ordinary families could never have achieved their positions without the strength of the Constitution.

Continuing his criticism, Modi accused Jawaharlal Nehru of curbing freedom of expression through constitutional amendments. He said Indira Gandhi imposed Emergency to defy a Supreme Court judgment that annulled her election as an MP. During this period, the judiciary was “throttled,” and the country was turned into a jail, he alleged. Modi also criticised Rajiv Gandhi for amending the Constitution after assuming office following his mother’s assassination.

Modi also spoke about the Constitutional amendments introduced by his government. He said his government repealed Article 370 to unify the country and implemented GST to establish the "one nation, one tax" regime.

“We also introduced the CAA. We take pride in these constitutional amendments, which were made to correct past mistakes,” he added.

The Prime Minister also proposed 11 resolutions for India’s future, calling on Parliament to adopt them. These include:

Citizens and governments must fulfil their duties.

Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas.

Zero tolerance towards corruption.

Laws should be followed with pride.

Freedom from a slave mentality.

Politics should be free from dynasties.

The Constitution should be respected, not weaponised for political gains.

Reservations should not be taken away from existing beneficiaries, and there should be no religion-based reservation.

India should lead the world in women-led development.

The country’s development must align with that of its states.

Ek Bharat, Shreshth Bharat.

Hailing India’s journey since the Constitution’s adoption in 1949fb777, Modi called it "extraordinary" and described the country as the "mother of democracy." He praised lawmakers for unanimously passing the law to reserve seats for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies. Modi also paid tributes to the Constitution’s framers and the citizens who upheld their vision.
